Another car I have been driving recently is the Fiat Grande Punto. Many of you will remember the old Punto which was a small hatchback around the same e size as a VW polo. The new Grande Punto has increased in size quick significantly to almost VW golf dimensions. This has given it much better rear legroom and now it has a boot big enough for most dogs. It is also a very good looking car designed by the great Giugiaro the designer of multiple Maseratis and Lamborghinis. The car was given a new work over in 2007 with a new front grille and other minor cosmetic changes. Fiat also introduced new engines doing away with the old entry level 1.2L engine and replacing it with a 1.4L 8v giving it a much needed performance boost.
So what is it like to own? Is it the best small car? It is a wonderful car to own and very cheap to buy compared to its rivals such as the VW polo and Seat Ibiza. To drive it is much more refined than many other cars in its class. There have been multiple occasions when I have been doing 60mph and not realising until I look down and gasp at the dashboard. I have the dynamic spec which is the mid range spec. It comes with Bluetooth and voice control which is very useful and much safer than other in car mobile devices. It also has a usb port for connecting any mp3 player or other usb device to the car. This mid spec is very well equipped with electric windows air conditioning and a trip computer and the city drive function which makes steering at low speeds incredibly easy. The interior cabin is very satisfying to be in and gives a good urge to get the car going. With a very light clutch anybody should be able to drive it comfortably. The power delivery is not quite as instant as I would like it to be at lower revs but if kept at high revs it can be rather nippy. After 1000 miles the current average mpg is a massive 56mpg 8 more than the 48mpg officially quoted. So it is a frugal car to drive too. For reliability issues gone are the days of cars rusting after a year Fiat have been continuously updating their quality control and now produce some very reliable and safe cars.
I would not say it is the best small car out there but it is incredibly cheap to buy and run, it can also give you some thrills when you want it to as well. It is not a racy as my seat Ibiza but is a lot more comfortable and I defiantly recommend if you are looking for a new small car you take one out for a test drive.
